Based on the weather forecast, people living in the northern part of Taiwan will be experiencing low temperature and high humidity. Dehumidifiers and electric heaters may be used for extended periods to keep warm and cozy. The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) reminds the public to pay attention to safety when using these products. It is especially important to regularly clean or replace the filters of dehumidifiers, and it is recommended that electrical appliances used for over 10 years undergo regular inspection by manufacturers to ensure their safety.
To prevent further incidents of defective dehumidifiers causing fires, the BSMI reiterates its call for consumers to check the brand and model of dehumidifiers used at home. Consumers should verify whether they are among the defective products (a total of 12 brands and 54 models) listed on BSMI's "Product Safety Information Network" website (https://safety.bsmi.gov.tw), where recall information issued by manufacturers is posted. If so, consumers are urged to immediately stop using them and promptly contact the respective brand's service hotline to arrange for repair or replacement of the circuit board. For more details, please visit the webpage under "Product Recall Information."
The BSMI states that when using dehumidifiers and electric heaters, people should not cover clothes on top of dehumidifiers for dehumidification. Also, they should avoid placing combustible materials such as clothes or blankets near electric heaters for heating, to prevent accidental fires.
When selecting dehumidifiers and electric heaters, it is important to make sure that they bear the "Commodity Inspection Mark" (as shown in the attached image) and check whether the manufacturer's name and address, electrical specifications (such as voltage, power consumption), and model number are clearly indicated. The "Commodity Inspection Mark" is granted to products that meets the requirements of relevant inspection standards. However, consumers should still follow the precautions listed in the user manual carefully. If there are doubts about whether the product has been certified, consumers are welcome to contact the BSMI (toll-free service number 0800-007-123) for assistance. When using dehumidifiers and electric heaters, special attention should be paid to the following points:
1.First, review the product user manual, follow the methods specified in the user manual, and pay special attention to the warnings and precautions listed in the product user manual.
2.The dehumidifier should not be used in enclosed closets or dressing rooms. When in use, clothes should not be covered on top of the dehumidifier, and it should be kept at an appropriate distance from walls, furniture, and curtains to prevent poor ventilation, which may hinder the dissipation of heat from the unit.
3.Please regularly clean the outer casing of the dehumidifier and clean or replace the filter according to the maintenance methods specified in the user manual. Before cleaning, remember to unplug the appliance. When wiping the casing, take precautions to prevent water from entering the interior of the product to avoid danger. After cleaning the filter, make sure to dry it thoroughly before placing it back into the dehumidifier for use.
4.When not using dehumidifiers and electric heaters, or when leaving the premises for an extended period, be sure to turn off the power and unplug the appliance. Additionally, dehumidifiers should not be used during nighttime sleep or left unattended when they are in use.
5.Due to the possibility of oxygen consumption by certain types of electric heaters, please do not use them in enclosed spaces. It is important to maintain proper ventilation indoors to prevent oxygen depletion and potential harm to users.
6.The outlet temperature of the electric heater is relatively high, so please be careful to avoid touching it to prevent burns. Also, ensure that the heater is not placed too close to bedding, especially blankets near the bed, to avoid the risk of fire.
7.Do not cover or dry clothes on the electric heater, and keep a distance from other flammable items, especially wallpaper and curtains.
8.Electric heaters consume a considerable amount of power and should be used with dedicated outlets, not shared with other appliances. If using extension cords, pay attention to the power consumption of the electric heater (in watts) and ensure it does not exceed the capacity of the extension cord to prevent insufficient capacity, which could lead to overheating and fire.
9.For patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, who may have delayed peripheral nerve sensation, it is recommended to use electric heaters under medical guidance. Family members should also assist in monitoring their usage.
10.If any malfunction occurs, the dehumidifier and electric heater should be sent to the manufacturer's designated repair station for maintenance. Do not attempt to disassemble and repair them yourself.
