In a groundbreaking move toward a more sustainable automotive industry, the Bureau of Standards, Metrology, and Inspection (BSMI) is proud to announce the opening of the first-ever energy-efficient tire testing lab at the Automotive Research & Testing Center (ARTC). This state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to advancing the development and testing of tires designed to reduce energy consumption, improve vehicle fuel efficiency, and support global efforts to lower carbon emissions.
Senior Presidential Advisor Shen, Jong-chin and Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Lien, Jin-chang were present at the launch, highlighting the lab's critical role in boosting Taiwan's tire industry competitiveness through its support of cutting-edge research and development. They emphasized that a robust regulatory framework for tire safety and performance would complement this initiative, ensuring that products meet the highest standards of safety, comfort, and energy efficiency, while contributing to global sustainability goals.
In response to global climate change, many countries have adopted stringent energy-efficiency regulations for tires, focusing on rolling resistance, wet grip, and noise reduction to enhance fuel efficiency, lower CO2 emissions, and improve road safety. Taiwan's tire industry, with an annual output of approximately NT$34 billion, NT$20 billion of which comes from exports, will greatly benefit from the new lab, which offers local testing services. This reduces the time and cost of overseas certification. Once tire energy efficiency standards become mandatory, the lab is projected to test 10 million tires annually, potentially saving 160,000 kiloliters of fuel and cutting carbon emissions by 370,000 metric tons each year-the equivalent of the carbon absorption capacity of 1,000 Da'an Forest Parks. This initiative is a significant step toward supporting Taiwan's 2050 net-zero policy goals.
BSMI Director General Chen, Yi-ling emphasized that the establishment of this testing laboratory represents a major milestone in BSMI's mission to promote safe and energy-efficient tires. As Taiwan's regulator for tire safety, BSMI has consistently focused on developing robust standards, as well as building a comprehensive testing and certification infrastructure. The new lab will not only elevate the performance of domestic tires but also ensure product quality, contributing to both consumer protection and sustainable development.
