The Bureau of Standards, Metrology & Inspection (BSMI) is glad to announce the establishment of CNS 16084 “Consumer product safety − Guidelines for suppliers” and CNS “16085 Consumer product recall − Guidelines for suppliers” on January 16, 2019. The two standards, which stemmed from ISO, provide best practices to product designers, manufacturers, distributors and retailers on issues regarding product safety and can ensure consumer safety.

Citing the famous saying “prevention is better than cure,” the BSMI said that accidents, recall and costs of replacing parts and redesigning can be avoided by incorporating the concept of safety at the product’s design stage. CNS 16084 includes practical guidelines on product safety at different stages of the product supply chain, including design, production, and marketplace. For example, the importance of inherently safe design, risk assessment and traceability and provision of instructions and warnings are all stated. A compilation of Q&A is also included to assist resource-limited small and medium enterprises in putting the guidelines into practice.

Meanwhile, CNS 16085 aims to provide practical guidance to suppliers on when and how to do product recall, repair, replacement and disposal when unsafe products enter the marketplace, reducing product safety risks.

The flow of information and goods are faster than ever due to the diversification of information communication. Although it is common for a product to be designed, manufactured and sold in different countries, this increases the difficulty of safety management. The BSMI encourages designers, manufacturers, distributors and retailers to adopt the two standards to reduce safety risks of products and to work together to remove unsafe products from the global market.
