Regarding media reports about an 8-year-old girl who died after being wedged in a folding table, the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) has appointed officials to investigate into the incident and is carrying out a market inspection. If the inspection reveals any safety concerns, the BSMI will request manufacturers to correct, recall or destroy the products according to the Consumer Protection Act. If necessary, the BSMI will order the manufacturers to stop the design, production, manufacture, process, import, distribution and provision of the products.

To ensure the safe use of folding tables, the BSMI will invite relevant vendors for a meeting and include folding table into list of commodities that must undergo mandatory inspection as soon as possible. Inspections will be carried out according to CNS 15185 Folding tables, which specifies safety inspection items such as “appearance,” “operation,” “safety devise reliability,” “stability” and “reachable holds and gaps”.

To prevent such incidents from happening again and to ensure consumer rights, the BSMI said that manufacturers and importers are responsible for product safety and correctness of labels. Consumers are also urged to buckle the safety device when using a folding table. Do not let children move or climb onto the table and stop children from playing around a folding table. When not in use, please store the table in places out of children’s reach to prevent children from being pinched, pressed or wedged in the table.
